West Reading Fire Department

What are those fire department people doing?
It's called "hydrant flushing". Here are some frequently asked questions about it.
1. What exactly are we doing, and why? We completely open and close every fire hydrant in the borough to "flush" out dirt that can accumulate at the base of the inside of the hydrant, which can affect how well, or if at all, the hydrant opens when we need it. In the process, we also find out if there are any problems with the hydrants that need to be addressed, and we inform the Borough so the hydrant can be repaired or replaced as quickly as possible.
2. How often do we do it? Our volunteers come out for two or three evenings, twice every year (in the spring and fall), to check every hydrant.

Do you have any questions about hydrant flushing?
Our Fire Police help mainly by making sure traffic can safely get around our hydrant flushing crews, that no collisions occur between cars traveling in opposite directions, and especially that none of our firefighters gets hit by a car!
This is just one example of how our Fire Police help our fire department serve our community. You can help (and your help is greatly needed and greatly appreciated)! Joining the fire police is easy! Just send a private Facebook message to our Captain, Tom Kupiszewski, for more information, or to ask any questions you'd like to ask!

West Reading Fire Department

Just before 1630, companies were dispatched to 492 S Wyomissing Ave for a structure fire. D42-3 arrived on location and reported a 2 1/2 story wood frame with heavy smoke and flames and upgraded it to 2nd alarm. Arriving crews encountered heavy fire to the rear of both 492 and 494. Two more alarms were called for additional manpower. Wind and weather conditions made bringing the fire under control difficult. The fire was brought under control and the Fire Marshal was investigating the cause. ... See MoreSee Less
